Funding available for uranium review

Funding will be available to help the public participate in a joint federal-provincial review of uranium mine developments in northern Saskatchewan.

The governments will grant a total of $350,000 to assist participants in reviewing environmental impact statements and preparing for public hearings on the following projects: Amok’s Dominique Janine Extension at Cluff Lake; Minatco’s McClean Lake; Denison Mines’ (TSE) Midwest joint venture at South McMahon Lake; Cameco’s (TSE) McArthur River joint venture; and Cigar Lake Mining’s Cigar Lake project.

A 5-member panel, consisting of three science professors, one native representative, and one occupational health specialist, has been appointed to conduct the review. Donald Lee, head of the chemistry department at the University of Regina, will chair the panel. James Archibald, a mining engineer and associate professor at Queen’s University, will provide mining expertise.
