LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Minas Mineral group makes plans

About a year ago in The Northern Miner, the Minas Mineral group reported that large, sedex deposits of bedded iron carbonates and barite might be the proximal indicators for Irish-type, carbonate-hosted base metal-silver deposits along the south coast of the Minas Basin in Hans Cty., N.S.

Minnova and Freewest Resources grubstaked prospecting activities carried out by Minas in large claim blocks south of the old barite-base metal-silver mine near Walton.

Minas reports that an important target was situated near a large sedex apron of iron-barium at the base of the lower Carboniferous or Winden-age carbonate horizons. Manganese bogs containing up to 16% zinc, with high barium concentrations, were found downslope from gravity-induced polarization anomalies.

Minas believes the supergene zinc, or surficial mineralization, is the surface manifestation of drift(overburden)-covered zinc deposits associated with magnesiosiderite or manganese-bearing iron carbonates. It is important to point out that this type of mineralization is the host or indicator for the high-grade silver zones and associated base metal mineralization in the Walton deposit.

The firms that backed the Minas Mineral venture are budgeting for more detailed exploration work and drilling near several iron-barium sedex aprons. Avard Hudgins
