A director of exploration with Inco Exploration and Technical Services, John Allan Sauerbrei, died recently of cancer in Sudbury, Ont. He was 55.
The Queen’s University graduate (with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geology) was hired as a staff geologist by the nickel giant in 1971. He was eventually made responsible for exploration in eastern North America, including the Sudbury Basin and the Thompson Nickel Belt.
During his career with Inco, Mr. Sauerbrei contributed to several mineral discoveries, including the McClean Lake uranium deposit in Saskatchewan, the Casa Berardi gold deposits in northwestern Quebec and the recent Victor and McCreedy discoveries in the Sudbury Basin.
Prior to joining Inco, he worked for Eldorado Nuclear in Eldorado, Sask., and King Resources out of Calgary.
He was awarded the Prospector of the Year award in 1984 by the Quebec Prospectors Association for contributing to the discovery of the Casa Berardi deposits.
Mr. Sauerbrei was an active member of a Sudbury Anglican church and was a governor of Thorneloe College at Laurentian University in Sudbury.
