Spokane meeting reviews ore deposits worldwide

Diversification for the ’90s” was the theme for the Pacific Northwest Metals & Minerals Conference recently held here. It featured a symposium on platinum and base metal deposits in North America. The talks covered a wide spectrum of subjects including the current and future prospects for the North American aluminum industry.

Other speakers highlighted gold deposits in the Pacific northwest. The U.S. Geological Survey gave overviews on precious metal mineralization in the Republic district of Washington and the Bannock district of Montana.

As well, there was a session on international mineral deposits in various regions of the Soviet Union, South Africa, Bolivia, Saudi Arabia and Puerto Rico.

Presentations on the environment, now a perennial favorite, covered the control of mine wastes, the design and construction of ground water monitoring wells and Washington state’s hazardous waste cleanup laws.

Prior to the start of the conference, a number of field trips were offered. The Northern Miner attended the trip to the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho.

The trip toured the “Silver Valley,” an area made famous for its silver-lead-zinc production in the late 1800s.
