Hemlo Gold charged in spill

A cyanide spill in March, 1990, at the producing Golden Giant gold mine of Hemlo Gold Mines in the Hemlo area of northern Ontario has resulted in the laying of charges by the Ontario and federal governments.

Ontario’s environment ministry laid a total of five charges under the Environmental Protection Act and the Ontario Water Resources Act, while Ottawa laid five charges under the Fisheries Act.

Hemlo Gold, controlled by Noranda Inc., said a broken pipe led to the discharge of the cyanide into a creek. Mine workers reacted to the spill by pouring hydrogen peroxide, which acts to break down the poisonous cyanide, into the water.

Trial date is to be set at a hearing May 29 in Marathon, Ont.
