Second mineral agreement signed

The governments of Canada and British Columbia recently agreed to spend $10 million over five years to strengthen and diversify the western province’s mineral industry.

British Columbia Mines Minister Anne Edwards said the agreement provides funding for both levels of government to address concerns of the industry in the 1990s. “These concerns include declining base metal reserves, technological changes, land use issues, aboriginal involvement and increasing international competitiveness,” she said.

The agreement will fund enhanced geoscience programs and technological research, demonstration projects to highlight industry issues, strategic studies of major institutional issues, and identify opportunities for aboriginal involvement in mining.

Part of a larger Economic and Regional Development Agreement, the recent bilateral mineral agreement is the second to be signed in B.C. The original 10-year umbrella agreement was signed in 1984.
