Guest speaker at a Nov. 26 luncheon sponsored by the Toronto Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum will be Brian Meikle. He will give an update of his namesake project in Nevada at Toronto’s Royal York Hotel.
American Barrick Resources’ Meikle gold deposit, immediately north of the company’s world-class Goldstrike open pit operation in the Carlin Trend of Nevada, contains more than 4.5 million oz. The project is expected to be in full production by 1996, yielding more than 400,000 oz. annually. Capital and operating costs are estimated at US$40 and US$125 per oz. respectively. Although Meikle will be a low-cost producer, the company must meet a number of challenges — geological complexity, variable ground conditions, high rock temperatures and hydrogeological constraints. A geology graduate of McGill University, Meikle joined Camflo Mines at Malartic, Que., in September, 1962, and rose through the ranks to become vice-president of operations in 1978.
When American Barrick acquired control of Camflo in 1984, Meikle was retained and later appointed as senior vice-president of development in the Toronto head office.
He is often praised for his work at the Mercur mine in Utah and the Goldstrike deposit.
