School of Mines in Haileybury marks 80th year

A dinner was held recently to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Haileybury School of Mines in Haileybury, Ont. Among the 90 participants was guest speaker John Gammon, assistant deputy minister of Northern Development and Mines.

The institute began in 1912 as part of the Haileybury High School. During the Second World War, the school was closed because of declining enrolment. Since reopening after the war, the institute has continued to grow in size and in 1967 it was incorporated into the Ontario community college system. Today, graduates from the college are well versed in mining, instrumentation and business.
