The ancient Greeks called diamonds “splinters of the stars.” That was before Hollywood became the home of stars but, nevertheless, there is a connection. Both kinds of stars have an affinity for one another.
Actress Elizabeth Taylor’s particular splinter fetched nearly US$3 million when she sold it in 1979. It is pear-shaped, about the size of the aluminum pull-tab on a pop can (though much thicker), and weighs slightly less than half an ounce.
More precisely, the diamond is 13.88 grams. Or, in diamond-dealer terms, 69.42 carats (a carat being 200 mg, with five carats to a gram).
