Asarco to close Idaho silver mine

The Galena silver mine in northern Idaho will be shut down July 26 and placed on a care-and-maintenance basis because of depressed silver prices, Asarco (NYSE) reports.

About 215 employees will be affected by the shutdown at the mine, which produced 3.3 million oz. silver in 1991. The mine is leased from Coeur d’Alene Mines (NYSE), which is the owner and which has a 25% participating interest in the lease.
