The coal industry is in such turmoil, the Calgary-based Coal Association of Canada has cancelled its Industry Outlook Symposium for October.
A key speaker dropped out when his mining company failed and many would-be industry guests couldn’t make the symposium because of problems at their own firms.
The association — already cash-strapped because of tight money in the mining sector — couldn’t afford to lose money on the event.
“The necessity to cancel this event may represent a microcosm of the coal industry in general,” a notice says.
