Manitoba is a province that has learned the hard way what devastation and havoc a New Democratic Party government can bring, not only to mining but also to manufacturing. Believe me, I have been there.
With its confiscation clauses, the NDP completely destroyed mining and mineral exploration for a period of 10 years in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
Exploration and mining financing will go where it is appreciated and wanted regardless of the geological formations and as it represents private enterprise; it is not wanted in NDP provinces.
Manitoba, a democratic free province squeezed between two future “have nots,” is open for business. To quote The Winnipeg Free Press of March 12, 1992, “the Filmon government has dramatically increased its funding — to encourage mining exploration in Manitoba.”
Highlights are a 60% funding increase to the government mining department, to encourage private mineral exploration; elimination of the
corporate capital tax on exploration costs and the introduction of a mining tax holiday (no tax until profits equal the capital outlays for new mines); and incentives to prospectors and small mining companies so they will come back to Manitoba after being driven out by the NDP.
And remember, Manitoba has two smelters, great geology and a great government. W. Bruce Dunlop
