Casa Berardi Est mine suspended

Operations at the Casa Berardi Est gold mine of TVX Gold (TSE) in northwestern Quebec were suspended recently after about 12,000 cubic metres of overburden flowed into the underground mine through a fault zone opening at surface.

Mine manager Robert LePage says the flow was triggered when the graphitic fault zone was loosened by mining. No injuries were reported. LePage says it’s anybody’s guess how long the mine will be under suspension. He says the surface opening must be secured before a cleanup on the 100-metre level, where most of the material landed, gets under way.

The Casa Berardi Est mine was operating at a rate of about 700 tonnes per day when the accident occurred.
