So Cominco teamed up with Chrysler Canada, a major user and promoter of zinc as a rust protector, to help fill the zinc awareness void. Over the nex t several years “Zinc: The Great Protector” is expected to become a familiar slogan to Can adians, particularly potential car buyers.
“Zinc is an excellent anti- corrosive material, but our research tells us that most Canadians are unaware of this fact,” said Klaus Goeckmann of Cominco Metal s. “The main objective is to educate Canadians on the merits of zinc as an anticorrosive material, as well as to educate them on zinc’s many othe r applications.
Although the automotive industry has been using zinc in die cast parts for decades, it has been only in recent years that zinc as an anti- corrosi ve material has gained in popularity.
In 1982, less than 20% of the steel in an average North American vehicle was zinc-galvanized. Today, the number is more than 50%, with some vehicles containin g nearly 90% zinc-coated steel.
