Morocco imports sulphur to mix with its naturally occurring phosphate rock to produce phosphoric acid. India buys the acid from Morocco for its own production of fertilizer. The pricing dispute has halted shipments of the acid to India.
Sulphur, which was selling in the $110-$115(US) per tonne range earlier this year, was reported to have fallen to below $100.
Morocco is a major buyer of sulphur from Canada, which is among the world’s top sulphur-producing nations. The Mining Association of Canada reports estimated sulphur production in Canada in 1988 of 6.7 million tonnes worth $534 million.
