Striking employees of Gibraltar Mines’ (TSE) copper mine and mill near Williams Lake, B.C. accepted an offer by the company to settle a 6 – month work stoppage.
Art Brown, mine manager, said the proposal included an immediate cash payment of $2,000 to each employee, wage increases averaging 7.8% in the first year and 4% in each of the second and third years, along with improvements in contract language and benefits.
The previous collective agreement with employees represented by CAIMAW expired in March, 1988, and after negotiations failed to reach an agreement, strike action began in May.
In late November, the company made what it termed a last settlement effort which the union recommended its members reject. Several days later, however, employees voted by 65% to accept a 3-year settlement. Mine management expects a speedy return to full operations.
