Hecla will exercise an option with mine operator St. George Corp., which filed for bankruptcy last year. The mine was closed at the first of September, 1988. St. George is a subsidiary of Musto Explorations (TSE). Germanium and gallium have application in high-tech industries. The publication Metals Week reports Hecla will try a new solvent extraction technology being used by Cominco to recover germanium. The Cominco method is reportedly more efficient than the sulphide precipitation method employed by St. George.
