About 1,750 hourly wage employees at Falconbridge Ltd.’s Sudbury, Ont., operations appear set to strike when their present contract expires on Aug 21.
“Things don’t look hopeful because there are so many items to be discussed before the Sunday morning strike deadline,” said Falconbridge spokesperson Ann O’Quinn.
She said the main stumbling block is the contracting out of production and maintenance work to non-union contractors. While mediators were attempting to get both sides back to the bargaining table at press time, a strike would shut down the nickel producer’s mining, milling and smelting operations in Sudbury.
