When the zinc famine was on in the U.S. in 1937, resulting in the importation of 45,000 tons, the discovery was made that any preconceived ideas about the amount of the metal in undisclosed inventories were entirely erroneous. This became known when the price began to fall precipitously and huge quantities of the metal emerged. American manufacturers fearing shortage, had accumulated large stores which they wished to liquidate on the decline. This is one of the unpredictable factors which adds to the confusion of any student of the world zinc situation. The preceding is reprinted from The Northern Miner, October, 1938
