Gold jumped into second place behind nickel as Ontario’s most important mineral in terms of value in 1986, the province’s ministry of northern development and mines reports.
The value of production of Ontario’s mineral industry (metallic, non-metallic, fuels and others) totalled more than $4.7 billion last year, a 5% increase over 1985.
The value of metallic minerals rose 4.6%. Even though the price of nickel remained low, it was the leading mineral produced in the province with a value of $816 million. Gold moved past uranium and copper to become the second most valuable mineral in the province with a production worth $766 million. Copper, with a value of $591 million, was third.
