Placer Dome takes a back seat to no one when it comes to finding and building new mines. In Canada, the company is evaluating three potential producers: the Eastmain project, 185 miles northeast of Chibougamau, Que., near James Bay; the Dona Lake project in northwestern Ontario; and the La Ronge play in northern Saskatchewan. On the Eastmain property, reserves stand at about one million tonnes grading 15.3 g gold per tonne (or 0.45 oz gold per ton). Underground exploration is the prime focal point this year, and a production decision seemed imminent as we were going to press.
At Dona Lake, a development decision has been made. This property, in the Pickle Lake area, hosts about four million tons grading 0.2 oz gold per ton.
In Saskatchewan, the Seabee project is the subject of an engineering feasibility study. More than two million tons grading 0.185 oz gold per ton had been calculated in a 1986 mineral inventory. Substantial underground development had been conducted last year.
Of course, Placer Dome hasn’t restricted itself to Canada. Both the Misima gold project in Papua New Guinea (about 200,000 oz per year) and the Big Bell in Western Australia (120,000 oz per year) are being brought into production.
