50 YEARS AGO — APRIL, 1938 HEMATITE DEPOSIT CUT IN 8 VERTICAL

Probing deep under the water and mud of the west middle arm of Steep Rock Lake, near Atikokan, Ont., a series of eight vertical diamond drill holes has punctured what appears to be a big deposit of hematite iron ore, according to Steroia Exploration Co. If these first drill indications of size and grade are borne out by subsequent development, then the long search for a first-rank commercial iron deposit in Canada will probably have ended. Reprinted from The Northern Miner, April, 1938.
