Gross award is presented

The first William Harvey Gross award, consisting of a medal and a cash supplement through an endowment provided by Lacana Mining Corp., was awarded to Robert Kerrich of the University of Saskatoon by the Mineral Deposits division of the Geological Association of Canada at its annual meeting in St. John’s, Nfld.

The GAC’s Mineral Deposits division initiated the award in recognition of the influence the late Dr Gross had on young economic geologists during his career. Gross taught economic geology and mineral economics at the University of Toronto from 1948 to 1968. He was one of the founders of Lacana Mining Corp., over the years serving as chairman, president and chief executive officer, and remained a director at the time of his death in August, 1987.

Dr Kerrich, who holds the George J. McLeod chair of geology at the University of Saskatoon, received the W. H. Gross award for his research into the genesis and emplacement of Archean gold deposits in Canada which has led to the quantitative description of gold- concentrating systems involving derivation of the metal-bearing fluids through metamorphic dewatering. This interpretation now forms a standard model for explaining the origin of these ancient precious metal accumulations, a model widely used by industry in exploration for these deposits. Kurtis Kyser, who accepted the award on behalf of Robert Kerrich of the University of Saskatoon.
