Editorial The “Odds” as history

Professor R. W. Thompkins, of Queen’s University, Kingston, has expressed an interesting and we think valid thought about the value of our regular “Odds ‘n’ Sods” column, carried on this page.

“Through the column,” says Professor Thompkins, “and the very nature of your publication, you have become the repository of the historical events and thoughts about the mining industry.”

Through its regular news pages The Northern Miner provides an ongoing chronicle of current events which do become tomorrow’s mining history — and it has been doing this for 72 years.

The Odds ‘n’ Sods columns, in their unique fashion, add personal color to that history. The men (and women) who contribute them have generally been very much a part of mining history, and their stories, (seldom dull, frequently amusing) cast quite a lot of human light on mining events.
