Editorial That gold perfume again

Remember the little company in Ajax, Ontario, that produces a very expensive brand of perfume claimed to contain actual flecks of gold? We’ve commented on it before in this space, because (not surprisingly) the presence of real gold in the perfume gives it a formidable selling price of around $15,000 for a single 32-oz bottle. That’s not just your average Chanel No 5 customer you’re talking about.

(We never did discover, by the way, if once applied to a fair one’s face this olfactory marvel also imparts a golden glow to the skin. If her husband were a geologist, for instance, he might get interesting assay results from a facial exploration).

At any rate, we now learn that the company which makes L’Air d’Or, as it’s called, is about to be acquired by another Toronto company, Sock Fiberglass (Canada), and further, that projected sales this year for L’Air d’Or are somewhere in the order of $1 million. Amazing that there are apparently something over 66,000 well-heeled customers ready to part with $15,000 just for a bottle of perfume, even if it is gold-laced.

Sounds as though Sock is going to get some punch. As for ladies going gaga over the smell as well as the sight of gold, we understand it. We’ve always been gold champions. Always will be.
