Further drill results on Falconbridge Ltd.’s so-far impressive new base and precious metals discovery near Sudbury, Ont., should be available “within three weeks,” according to M. J. Knuckey, vice-president exploration.
Mr Knuckey tells The Northern Miner drilling with six machines is continuing on the Lindsley property, where initial intersections from a deep hole to 4,599 ft, suggests (N.M., Aug 10/87) the ore is up to three times richer than for the company’s five currently-producing mines in the Sudbury Basin.
The property is located in Blezard Twp., about 20 km west of Falconbridge’s Sudbury-area smelter, and one kilometre northeast of Inco Ltd.’s Little Stobie mine.
The Falconbridge executive says with some of the currently-drilled holes going as deep as 6,000 ft, the drill program does and will take time, and likely will continue for at least another six months.
The best results to date came from an earlier hole, B51B, which intersected 255.5 ft grading 2.3% nickel, 4.4% copper, 0.12% cobalt, 0.44 oz silver, 0.07 oz gold, 0.08 oz platinum and 0.27 oz palladium per ton.
Commenting on a report that in addition to a high grade of nickel, the discovery was turning up gold grades as high as 0.3 oz per ton, Mr Knuckey said the company was not getting such gold grades “over any significant widths.”
