Phoenix Geophysics of Markham, Ont., has obtained a contract for NEDO (New Energy Development Organization) of Japan for a magnetotelluric (MT) survey on the island of Kyushu. The contract, for an estimated $507,000(C) should be completed by the end of October. NEDO is in charge of the development of geothermal resources in Japan and is planning extensive work on the MT program, an ongoing national project.
Phoenix won against American and European competition. The Canadian embassy in Tokyo has been of great assistance and provided strong support, J. Ranoux, Phoenix president, says.
Phoenix is also conducting MT surveys for other customers including Hydro Quebec and a major U.S. oil company.
The company manufactures a wide range of electrical geophysical equipment used for surveys or sold to customers. It specializes in advanced electrical geophysics such as magnetotellurics, controlled source audio-magnetotellurics, spectral and phase-induced polarization. It also sells instruments such as VLF, resistivity meters and frequency-domain IP.
