Stream-sediment sampling by the Ontario Geological Survey in the Mattawa-Cobalt corridor has identified significant kimberlite indicator minerals at several sites. The area is believed to host kimberlites.
Some of the samples collected contain anomalous numbers of rare mineral grains such as G10 garnets, chromites, magnesium ilmenites and chrome diopsides.
Says OSC geologist Janet Reid: “The results are significant in terms of the numbers of grains recovered and their geochemistry. This warrants further investigation for diamond bearing rocks.”
The study is one of roughly 25 ongoing OGS field projects examining Ontario’s geology and mineral potential.
This year, the OGS will spend $7.8 million on 90 geoscience projects.
