La Motte uneconomic: Soquem

We read with great interest your article on Raymor Industries (T.N.M., March 11-17). While very interesting, the article stated that a prefeasibility study funded by Soquem on the La Motte property, had “confirmed it was possible to produce spodumene at about half the current market costs, thanks to low-cost open-pit mining and the added value of byproduct feldspar and mica.”

We wish to confirm that Soquem completed a prefeasibility study on the La Motte property in January 2000. However, contrary to what is reported in your article, the conclusions were not at all favourable and demonstrated that, at existing market prices for spodumene, feldspar and mica, the property could not be put into production at a profit.
