The government of Canada liquidated 55,000 oz. gold in December 2001 to hold 1.1 million oz. in reserve.
The value of the remaining reserves is US$291 million, down from US$305 million in November 2001. Gold holdings were valued at US$323 million in the corresponding period of 2000.
Canada’s total international reserves, which include U.S. dollars and other foreign currencies as well as gold, were valued at US$34,24 billion at Dec. 31, 2001, down from US$34.585 billion a month earlier. At the end of 2000, total reserves were US$32.42 billion.
