Facts need checking

Stuart McDougall recently wrote a front-page article on the expanded Lac des les palladium mine in northwestern Ontario (T.N.M., Sept. 10-16/01). While his report on current activities may be factual, his personal comments on the history of the property are not.

The initial discovery of the nickel-copper-PGE mineralization at Lac des Ies was made by prospectors Walter Baker and George Moore in 1963. In 1987, the mining industry recognized Walter Baker’s role at Lac des les and Hemlo by presenting him with the Prospector of the Year award.

McDougall’s suggestion that these early workers had misinterpreted the trend of the mineralization is both simplistic and incorrect.

I do not believe it was the author’s intention to mislead your readers. However, I feel that more research would result in a more responsible article.

UN a ‘useless’ bureaucracy

In your Aug. 6-12 issue, there was an editorial entitled “United they stand, united they fall,” which succeeds in summing up the futility of the United Nations.

Few North Americans realize what a useless bureaucracy we support with our tax dollars.

I will make copies of your article and send them to my senators in Washington, D.C.
