A cyanide management code is being developed for the gold mining industry under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council on Metals and the Environment (ICME).
Late last year, representatives of the gold sector, government, non-government organizations, cyanide producers, and financial institutions formed a committee to develop such a code. Their efforts are expected to bear fruit late this year.
The code is designed to minimize risks to workers, communities and the environment from the use of cyanide in gold mining.
