Hair appointed head of ICMM

Conservationist Jay Hair has been appointed secretary general of the London-based International Council on Mining and Metals, the successor organization to the International Council on Metals and the Environment (ICME).

Hair has led two of the world’s most prominent environmental organizations, including the U.S. National Wildlife Federation.

“We welcome on board a strong leader with an extensive background in the areas and issues that will be critical to the success of our industry in the coming years of change,” says ICME Chairman Douglas Yearley.

From 1981 to 1995, Hair was president and chief executive officer of the National Wildlife Federation, America’s largest membership-based environmental organization.

In January 1994, he was elected to a 3-year term as president of Switzerland-based IUCN
