A database financed by the Ontario government promises to improve access to information about mining lands tenure.
CLAIMaps II provides information and maps via the Internet, and, as its name implies, is the second phase of a program originally launched in 1998.
“With more than 190,000 active mining claims in the province, understanding the status of land tenure is a critical element of the mineral exploration equation,” says Dan Newman, minister of Northern Development and Mines.
The claim maps on display reveal the status of properties that are open for staking. But instead of being shown individual maps of a small areas, users are now able to pan across a seamless map of Ontario and zoom in on those areas. “Pointing and clicking” allows them to view information on specific claims, and topographic detail has also been improved.
More than 2,700 claim maps can be viewed or downloaded free-of-charge through the CLAIMaps web-site at www.gov.on.ca/MNDM/MINES/LANDS/mlsmnpge.htm
The database was introduced at the annual convention of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada, held recently in Toronto.
