Denver — A shipment of unrefined gold from the West African nation of Benin was recently reported missing at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, according to an Associated Press report.
The gold, valued at US$1.5 million, was not officially declared stolen, though it was reported missing after it failed to arrive from Paris.
The Chicago Police Department say the gold, weighing 250 kg, was shipped in five metal boxes. Three boxes were found at the airport, though they were not the same boxes initially used to ship the gold.
The gold was bound for a refinery in Utah. Sources at Johnson Matthey, the state’s only large refiner, say the company knew nothing of the incident.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate.
