Ground Control Project Leader

The primary objective of the Mines and Aggregates Safety and Health Association (MASHA) is to help Ontario’s mining industry eliminate serious incidents. In the past 10 years, one third of all fatalities in Ontario’s underground hard rock mines have been related to falls of ground. The mining industry is looking for resources it can use to improve ground control practices and procedures. To meet this need, we are looking for a Ground Control Project Leader who can work with underground crews and supervisors to prevent serious incidents related to ground control.

At the close of this one-year contract, the project should lead targeted firms to achieve significant improvements in the way groundcontrol activities are conducted. To accomplish this, under the direction of MASHA’s Ground Control Specialist, the Ground Control Project Leader will:

  • audit underground mines to review basic ground control practices and suggest ways those practices could be improved;
  • review procedures related to perimeter drilling and blasting, and ground support installation, and recommend improvements;
  • deliver hands-on training to supervisors and crews;
  • follow up and evaluate the changes made.

The ideal candidate will have extensive practical experience in various underground hard rock mining methods, as well as in-depth knowledge of all support types, and the ability to establish rapport with workers at the face. Front-line supervisory experience is a requirement, as are excellent verbal communication skills. A degree or diploma from a mining school would be an asset.

This position requires extensive travel to underground mines across Ontario. If you feel you have the qualifications required, please send your resume by July 9 to:
