Rio Narcea makes discovery

Rio Narcea Gold Mines (RNG-T) reports that ongoing exploration of its large land package in the Austurias region of northern Spain has unearthed gold mineralization believed to have similarities to the high-grade gold skarns mined in British Columbia’s Hedley mining district.

Rio Narcea, which recently began producing gold at its nearby El Valle mine, made the discovery during a drilling program aimed at testing the western margin of the Ortosa diorite intrusive, situated 1 km northwest of the Ortosa East zone of the Godan deposit. The discovery hole at Ortosa West intercepted a true thickness of 11.1 metres averaging 6.8 grams gold per tonne at a vertical depth of 110 metres. That hole shares the same stratigraphic horizon as an earlier hole that intercepted 7.2 grams gold over a true thickness of 11 metres at a downhole depth of 237 metres.

After the discovery was made, Rio Narcea drilled another hole up-dip, at a location more distal to the intrusive, and intercepted a true thickness of 9.6 metres averaging 2.7 grams gold, including 1.4 metres of 11.5 grams.

The company says data in hand from the two zones show a tight stratigraphic control for mineralization around the intrusive.

Rio Narcea says both Ortosa East and the newly discovered Ortosa West zone of the Godan deposit are open, and indications are that they may be connected. A second rig is being moved to the site to test for possible extensions.
