Management of Regal Goldfields (REGL-C) is considering its options after the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia ruled that the province’s natural resources ministry acted lawfully when it restricted exploration, development and mining activities in Jim Campbell’s Barren earlier this year.
Regal owns, or has optioned, licences covering about 95% of the Barren, which was designated a candidate protected site in 1993. The government removed the Barren from the protected list in late 1996, only to relist it less than a year later (T.N.M. March 9-15/98).
In a release, Regal stated that it is “disappointed” by the decision and is reviewing alternatives, which may include an appeal of the decision and an action for compensation.
In the meantime, the company says work will continue at its claims in Kidd Twp., near Timmins, Ont. Falconbridge (fl-t) holds an option to earn a 70% interest in the project. The major drill-tested a previously identified anomaly on the property, but pulled only 30 metres of graphite. A second anomaly has been identified and will be tested later this year.
