Further sampling near the Yuri kimberlite discovery at the Back Lake project in the Northwest Territories has returned five macrodiamonds (measuring greater than 0.55 mm in one dimension) and two micros from a 50-kg till sample of weathered kimberlite.
One of the stones measures 5 mm in the largest dimension and weighs 0.12 carat.
SouthernEra Resources (SUF-T) discovered the kimberlite occurrence this summer during follow-up sampling on a strong indicator mineral train. An earlier, 10-kg soil sample of weathered, green clay kimberlite yielded two small macrodiamonds from plus-0.5 mm of screen sieve material.
The kimberlite is reported to contain both peridotitic and eclogitic nodules. More than a third of the pyrope garnets recovered from the till samples are classified as G10s, and analysis of the ilmenites suggests several possible kimberlite sources.
A further 220 kg of kimberlitic till and soil are being tested. Also, additional test pits are being excavated to aid in determining the source location of the kimberlite material.
Ground geophysical surveys indicate that the kimberlite find is associated with a composite magnetic feature.
A minimum 1,500-metre drill program is targeting the Yuri prospect and at least three other nearby geophysical targets.
The Back Lake project is held 70% by SouthernEra and 19.38% by Kalahari Resources (KLA-V). The remaining 10.62% interest is held by a consortium of juniors, including Island-Arc Resources (IAR-V), Victory Ventures (VIP-V), Ella Resources (ERE-V), International Ballater Resources (IBA-V), Gulfside Industries (GFS-V) and Asia Minerals (AMP-A).
