Work crews developing the Lockerby nickel-copper-cobalt mine in Sudbury, Ont., have surpassed 300,000 man hours without a lost-time injury.
The development program, carried out by J.S. Redpath, involves ramp development, Alimak raising, underground excavation and construction and the installation of an underground hoist. Since May 1995, when the program began, 140 employees have worked the equivalent of 268 straight 8-hour shifts without any lost-time accidents.
Falconbridge suspended the operation in 1994 owing to high mining costs and poor market conditions. Work began in May 1995, and the current $47-million development program is expected to bring the mine to full production next year.
