Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) and HDRK Mining Research are the joint recipients of the 1996 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine for inventing an instrument used to detect loose rock in mines.
In tests, the prototype of the small sensing tool achieved a 99% reliability rating in detecting loose rock that could fall and injure miners.
Advanced Mining & Tunnelling Systems International, which owns HDRK Mining Research, has the licence to market the system and is currently seeking a partner.
Previous technological advances to have won the award include the fax machine, the digital watch and the automated teller.
