CIM honors mining industry’s best

The achievements of Canada’s mining community were recognized at an awards dinner held by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM) at its annual meeting in Edmonton, Alta.

* The Barlow Memorial Medal, which is given to the best paper on economic geology published by the CIM, was awarded to Daniel Boyle of the Geological Survey of Canada. His paper examined the genesis of the Murray Brook deposit in New Brunswick.

* The Selwyn G. Blaylock Medal, awarded for achievement in the field of mining, metallurgy or geology, was given to Owen Owens, former vice-president of exploration for Cominco. Owens was recognized for the development and application of geological principles in exploration and reserve definition.

* John White, president of Novicourt, received the Inco Medal, which recognizes important contributions to the Canadian mining and metallurgical industry. White was cited for his leadership in implementing advanced mining technology.

* The Distinguished Service Medal was awarded to David Robertson, a past chairman of the Toronto branch of the CIM. Robertson, a past winner of the Barlow Memorial Medal, has been involved with the organization for more than 45 years.

* David Harquail was presented the Past Presidents’ Medal and the Robert Elver Mineral Economics Award.
