LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Manitoba government rejects map-staking

A recent editorial dealt with the subject of map-staking and the current attention being given to it in Manitoba (T.N.M., March 25/96).

In our efforts to make Manitoba the most attractive province in Canada in which to invest in mineral exploration and mining development, we have learned that, in order to become successful, we must not only listen to our customers but take action to address their concerns. In the case of map-staking, Manitoba’s mining industry has voiced its wish not to proceed with map-staking at this time.

Respecting this sentiment, map-staking will not be implemented in Manitoba in the immediate future.

I agree whole-heartedly with the theme of your editorial — that Canada’s prospectors are indeed the motor that drives our mining industry.

Darren Praznik

Manitoba Minister of Energy and Mines
