I am writing in response to your article on nuclear waste disposal (“Waste disposal concept to undergro scrutiny,” in T.N.M., Dec.18/95), which should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to know what is wrong with government.
How on earth could another 25 years of study be required, when researchers have already been at it for 30 years? It took fewer than 10 years to put a man on the moon, and they started from scratch!
I know very little about nuclear technology, but, after five years in the pools, even I know that the waste is little more dangerous than the ore that comes from the mines — provided it is handled properly.
What’s wrong with putting the spent rods back in the ground at Elliott Lake, which is where they came from in the first place? I’m sure that community would jump at the prospect of 875 new jobs.
