The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) has received copies of the 8-volume Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Dia Met Minerals-BHP Minerals diamond joint venture in the Northwest Territories.
The report, which is available for public viewing at the PDAC’s Toronto office, (Tel: 416-362-1969) represents 3.5 years of intensive sampling and exploration, 3 years of community consultation, and 2 years each of environmental baseline work and engineering.
The EIS covers the development of five kimberlite pipes: Panda, Misery, Koala, Fox and Leslie.
The total capital expenditures during the mine life is estimated at $1.2 billion, and project revenue is expected to be about $500 million per year.
The project — which does not require government subsidies — is expected to contribute $2.5 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the N.W.T., $6.2 billion to the GDP of Canada with total revenues to the government of $2.5 billion.
