Preliminary sampling results from the Choquelimpie exploration project in Northern Chile indicate grades of 6.98 grams gold and 50.54 grams silver per tonne, plus 0.9% copper.
Northgate Exploration (TSE) and its partner, Quilacoyan, a Chilean firm, obtained their samples after sinking a 12-metre shaft and completing 30 metres of tunnelling in the area below the former Choquelimpie open-pit gold mine, which closed in 1992.
Exploration for more sulphide mineralization is ongoing, with another 150 metres of tunnel scheduled to be completed in the current phase of the program.
In 1993, Northgate built a US$3.6-million plant for the rewashing of spent ore piles from the former heap-leach operation. President Patrick Downey says monthly recoveries are averaging 800 oz. gold and 10,000 oz. silver, and he expects the rewashing operations to continue until the end of the year. Concurrent with the rewashing project is the closure of the original open-pit operation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
