Xstrata suspends copper production at Kidd smelter for 8 weeks

Citing weak sulphuric acid demand, Xstrata Copper, a subsidiary of Xstrata (XTA-L), is suspending copper production at its Kidd smelter near Timmins, Ont., for eight weeks starting April 13. During the closure, the concentrator and zinc operations will continue.

According to a Reuters report, the smelter produced 550,000 tonnes of acid and 124,000 tonnes of copper cathode last year. The Kidd Creek mine and refinery will continue operating, and will stockpile concentrate. Copper shipments will continue from inventories.

The closure will affect 175 employees, some of whom will take vacations. Many will be offered opportunities to replace contractors.
