SUMMARY:“Advanced Mass Balancing and Inference” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:In order to optimize a mineral processing plant there are nine steps required:\n1.	Collect data (measurement)\n2.	Collate data (into a database)\n3.	Flowsheeting\n4.	Mass Balance\n5.	Inference\n6.	Determine Operational Parameter\n7.	Model fit\n8.	Simulate\n9.	Optimise\nMass balancing is often taught using least squares minimization. Inference is generally not taught and in the absence of inference\, model fitting is rendered very difficult\, which is why mineral processing simulation is generally much more difficult than it should be.\nIn this course we focus on mass balancing and inference. Whilst mass balancing is taught initially from a conventional least squares minimization approach\, the course then discusses a probabilistic or information theory approach. Information theory is a relatively new area of mathematics which is only available to participants through this course. By using information theory one can infer ore properties at each stream in great depth (i.e. multi-mineral particle distributions); thereby providing the basis for later steps (particularly modelfitting).

SUMMARY:“Advanced Excel VBA for Engineers and Scientists” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:More than 90% of quantitative professionals (inclusive of Engineers\, scientists and analysts) use Excel at a basic level. Yet possibly less than 10% would have received any guidance on how to use Excel effectively. Hence many professionals use Excel in a manner that much of their work is not shared effectively with their colleagues leading to a significant loss in productivity.\nIndeed there are ‘Horror stories’ where poor Excel management has lead to millions of dollars in direct losses through wholesale loss of data and models.\nThe course focuses on providing a strategy to ensure that Excel is used efficiently. At the end of the course participants will be invited to estimate the efficiency gain that is provided by using the strategies of the course.

SUMMARY:Empirical Design Methods For Underground Mines
DESCRIPTION:The ultimate objective of the course is to assist the mine operator in making decisions employing sound geotechnical input with reference to case histories for relevance to safety\, weak rock mass assessment\, reduction in dilution\, and backfill. \nThis course provides the operators of underground mines with the tools required to make on site pillar and opening stability assessments in order to ensure a safe and cost effective mine operation. Tools for assessing opening stability are provided. Empirical methods for considering the complex interaction of stress\, opening geometry\, structure\, and rock mass are provided. Ample time is given for solving stability problems and participants are strongly encouraged to bring case histories or questions from their own operations. \nCase history data brought to class should include stope or pillar geometry\, depth\, and estimated stress levels as well a description of the rock mass and photos as possible. \nParticipants will learn how to: \nmake decisions on site stability assessments of openings and pillars;\ndevelop an understanding of the critical field data required for stability assessment;\njudge the influence of rock mechanics on the stability of planned openings; and\nunderstand the influence of rock mechanics on overall mine design.\nFor details of topics covered see the course schedule. \nOver four hundred participants throughout North America\, South America\, Africa\, Europe\, Asia and Australia have taken this course over the last twenty years; it is recognized by mining operations in North America as providing “common core” training for onsite personnel in the field of rock mechanics. \nPeople interested in this course may also want to register for Rock Mass Characterization for Mine Design\, scheduled to run in the same week.

SUMMARY:Rock Mass Characterization for Mine Design
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this course is to provide mine staff the tools required to effectively gather geotechnical data for rock mass classification and rock mechanics design calculations. The majority of rock falls in mine operations are structurally controlled. Design is largely controlled by existing structure. It is critical that site characterization be performed so as to identify the structural factors that would affect rock slope angles\, drill and blast design\, support requirements\, resultant dilution and span design\, etc. A good understanding of rock mass structure forms the basis of rock mass classification which is used in the majority of rock mechanics design methods. \nUpon completion of the course the participants will be able to gather geotechnical data\, either from rock cuts\, drifts or core\, and process the information for subsequent analysis. The focus of the course is towards gathering information for purposes of analysis and design. The goal is to use effective mapping techniques to obtain data that can be used as input for any of the established rock classification systems. All of the commonly used classification values such as Barton’s Q and Q’ systems\, Bieniawski’s RMR\, Laubscher’s MRMR and Hoek’s GSI systems will be covered. \nThis course will include a half-day underground mapping and rock classification tour at Britannia Mine\, and a half-day surface mapping and rock classification field trip on the outskirts of Vancouver. \nPeople interested in this course may also want to register for Empirical Design Methods For Underground Mines\, scheduled to run in the same week.

SUMMARY:“Lithium Processing (Hard Rock and Brine)” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:Lithium (and its chemicals) has been a hot commodity over the last couple of years due to new applications of this metal in consumer electronics\, smart grid storage\, lithium ion batteries and electric battery powered vehicles. Lithium based chemicals are produced either from lithium brines or from lithium bearing minerals.\nLithium projects are not easy to develop and there are examples of project failures due to lack of knowledge and understanding of complexity in impurity removal or temporal component of grade and composition in brine deposits or chemistry issues in hard rock processing.\nIn this course we introduce participants to the basic concepts and operations involved in lithium processing including:\n•	An overview of the mineralogy and geology of lithium bearing ores and genesis and the impact this has on the processing plant.\n•	A comparison between hard rock lithium mining vs. harvesting lithium brines.\n•	The unit operations and equipment used in lithium processing (hard rock and brine).\n•	Typical flowsheets and their application to various lithium ores (coarse vs. fine particle separation).\n•	Metallurgical testwork required to characterise a lithium ore or brine.

SUMMARY:Analysis of Mining Financials
DESCRIPTION:This course will enable you to develop an awareness of the relevant financial information you can discover about a mining corporation from its audited financial statements. You will also have an appreciation for how accountants are challenged with exercising professional judgment on qualitative issues involving alternative accounting standards\, balanced with a need for numerical precision. You will recognize that professional judgments included in financial assessments are similar to those made in demonstrating probable and proven mineral reserves. \n“Analysis of Mining Financials” uses the business environment in the mining industry as a relevant context for understanding the financial statements of mining corporations. It isolates select accounting aspects as being fundamental to your becoming an informed reader of audited financial statements . . . including balance sheets\, income statements\, cash flows statements\, statements of shareholders’ equity and the audited notes. Examples of financial statements of both large and small mining companies are used and analyzed to illustrate these fundamentals. \nThe course draws on credible sources to highlight relevant characteristics of accounting for mining. The objective of this material is to identify some prominent aspects of financing the corporate mining strategy\, delve into the distinct areas where there are issues in accounting for the mining industry\, and summarize the risks that are inherent in understanding the financial statements of those involved in mining. The course provides the tools to establish a profile of a company’s overall financial status and identifies the attributes that contribute to financial health and flexibility. \nParticipants are advised to bring a laptop computer (with MS Excel).

SUMMARY:Metal Mining Discharges - Impacts and Controls
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this course is to encourage environmentally-sensitive mining practice by educating mining engineers and environmental professionals about impacts of metals on fish\, other aquatic species\, and human health. A related objective is to promote collaboration between engineers and scientists with respect to prospecting\, design\, development\, permitting\, operation\, and closure of mines to reduce discharge of metals to the aquatic environment. \nThis course is an overview of metals and related “semi-metals” (aluminum\, arsenic\, cadmium\, chromium\, copper\, gold\, lead\, manganese\, mercury\, nickel\, selenium\, silver\, tin\, uranium\, and zinc) that are mined or emitted as by-products of mining. We will begin with a description of aquatic ecosystems\, and how mining and other human activities discharge metals and acid rock drainage (ARD) to these ecosystems. We will then focus on properties of metals\, principles of metal toxicity\, exposure pathways\, factors affecting metal toxicity\, and acute and chronic effects of each metal on aquatic organisms and human health. There will be a discussion of source control and remediation of metal contamination and ARD at mine sites. The course will conclude with a small group exercise in which class participants will present and discuss case studies that illustrate what has been taught.

SUMMARY:Valuation of Mineral Projects Based on Technical and Financial Modelling
DESCRIPTION:This course aims to enhance an understanding of the business of mining. Actual operating mine valuations are a central focus of the course. \nThe basics of quantitative finance and the key interface with the accounting cash flow model will be covered as part of the course. No prior knowledge is assumed but the treatment is intensive. What is assumed is that attendees have had some exposure to the technical aspects of minerals and mining. \nWorkshop sessions are also an integral part of the course delivery and use will be made of the IC-MinEval software which automates the generation of Excel™-based spreadsheets to produce models for a wide range of mineral projects. These models can be saved as fully-linked workbooks and continued use is quite independent of the software. Attendees can generate their own models which can be preserved indefinitely and have normal Excel functionality. \nParticular attention is given during the workshops to demonstrating how financial models should be set up with a rate of production appropriate to the size of the resource. Realistic associated capex and opcosts are determined with reference to CostMine. The circumstances in which it is appropriate to set up models based on a straight discount rate basis compared to including debt are outlined. In the latter case the approach to determining the appropriate level of debt will be explained. \nAnalysis will be undertaken during the workshop sessions on the financial performance indicators generated and there will also be an indication of the valuation that could be placed on the asset. Sensitivity analysis will be undertaken on key variables. Particular attention will be given to why sensitivity on variables such as mining dilution should not be considered. Consideration will also be given to the role of financial models in identify those technical variables that have the greatest impact on financial performance and then back-engineering that to the corresponding technical risk. \nDiscussion will be aimed at enhancing the level of understanding demonstrated in the analysis of the financial performance indicator generated and the degree to which conclusions can be supported by the assumptions made. \nIn addition to the presentation slides\, attendees will receive a copy of the book Metals and Energy Finance\, authored by Prof. Buchanan. \nParticipants are expected to have their own laptop computers available for this course.
