SUMMARY:Sampling Theory\, Sampling Practices\, and Their Economic Impact
DESCRIPTION:Poor sampling\, compounded by poor laboratory subsampling\, leads to questionable geostatistics\, and generates severe conciliation problems between the geological model\, the mine\, and the plant estimates. These problems also affect the price of commodities and the validity of environmental assessments. The result is a huge money loss for the company involved\, evolving later in likely litigation. It is of key importance for geologists\, miners\, metallurgists\, chemists\, and environmental specialists to extract maximum information from the available data\, as large investments and crucial decisions depend on it.

SUMMARY:“Advanced Excel VBA for Engineers and Scientists” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:More than 90% of quantitative professionals (inclusive of Engineers\, scientists and analysts) use Excel at a basic level. Yet possibly less than 10% would have received any guidance on how to use Excel effectively. Hence many professionals use Excel in a manner that much of their work is not shared effectively with their colleagues leading to a significant loss in productivity.\nIndeed there are ‘Horror stories’ where poor Excel management has lead to millions of dollars in direct losses through wholesale loss of data and models.\nThe course focuses on providing a strategy to ensure that Excel is used efficiently. At the end of the course participants will be invited to estimate the efficiency gain that is provided by using the strategies of the course.

SUMMARY:“Advanced Mass Balancing and Inference” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:In order to optimize a mineral processing plant there are nine steps required:\n1.	Collect data (measurement)\n2.	Collate data (into a database)\n3.	Flowsheeting\n4.	Mass Balance\n5.	Inference\n6.	Determine Operational Parameter\n7.	Model fit\n8.	Simulate\n9.	Optimise\nMass balancing is often taught using least squares minimization. Inference is generally not taught and in the absence of inference\, model fitting is rendered very difficult\, which is why mineral processing simulation is generally much more difficult than it should be.\nIn this course we focus on mass balancing and inference. Whilst mass balancing is taught initially from a conventional least squares minimization approach\, the course then discusses a probabilistic or information theory approach. Information theory is a relatively new area of mathematics which is only available to participants through this course. By using information theory one can infer ore properties at each stream in great depth (i.e. multi-mineral particle distributions); thereby providing the basis for later steps (particularly modelfitting).

SUMMARY:"Metallurgical Testwork\, Interpretation & Process Design" Short Course
DESCRIPTION:The metallurgical testwork program is generally the most important critical path item for process design of a circuit and if it is not implemented in a well-structured and framed way by an experienced subject matter expert it can become the main reason of a mining project fatal flow.\nNot two ore bodies are the same. Although development of a suitable process flowsheet to treat an orebody appears to be a relatively straightforward\, selecting the optimum process whilst maintaining the maximum recovery and revenue is a complex task.\nAspects of metallurgical test program ranging from initial sample selection and ore characterisation to understand metallurgical response of an ore to complex pilot tests. It is necessary to develop metallurgical testplan that can cater for the variability in the orebody\, whilst still providing optimum economics on the majority of the process plant feed. This course will provide the participants with the knowledge to:\n•	Why and what metallurgical testwork?\n•	Developing metallurgical testwork\n•	Identify the testwork requirement\n•	Definition of the laboratory testwork appropriate for the study type and sampling requirement\n•	Test results and data interpretation\n•	Sample variability and pilot tests\n•	Process circuit design and flowsheet development based on testwork outcome\n•	Risk and mitigation in testwork

SUMMARY:“Uranium Ore Processing” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:Uranium is known to occur in over 200 different minerals but most of these do not occur in deposits of sufficient grade to warrant economic extraction. Uranium ore can be extracted by open pit\, underground or in-situ mining methods.\nUranium mill process flowsheets and unit operations for yellow cake production vary based on chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ore to be processed. Ore characteristics are a particularly important component of the understanding the process development. Numerous other factors such as geology\, radiation safety\, economics\, geography\, environment\, and regulations can change the uranium ore processing technology selection criteria.\nIn this course we introduce participants to the basic concepts and operations involved in uranium ore processing including:\n•	An overview of the various types of mining techniques in uranium industry.\n•	An introduction of the mineralogy of uranium bearing ores and associated minerals and the impact this has on the method of uranium extraction used.\n•	The basic operations and equipment used in uranium mills.\n•	The structure of flowsheets and their application to various uranium ores.\n•	Metallurgical testwork required to characterise a uranium ore.\n•	Meeting regulatory compliance for environmental and radiation concerns in the Uranium industry.

SUMMARY:WMMI Speakers’ Bureau Lecture with Daniel Kile
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Ore Microscopy\nEver since ore minerals have been mined\, there has been a need to identify them and discern their chemistry and associations. This information is essential to the mining industry to assess the value of the ore\, and to determine the most efficient means of concentrating the mineral of economic interest. This lecture will highlight some of the important observations and corresponding properties that can be evaluated with an ore microscope\, and give an overview of the basic equipment required to do so.\nThe reflected light/ore microscope used for ore microscopy was developed in the 1920s. In contrast to a transmitted light microscope that is used to examine rock thin sections\, an ore microscope utilizes vertically incident light to examine the metallic\, opaque minerals that are of economic importance. Optical properties of reflectance\, bireflectance\, and anisotropism\, as well as physical properties of cleavage\, twinning\, internal reflections\, and hardness\, as can be observed in an ore microscope\, will be summarized in this lecture\, in addition to a discussion and demonstration of some of the required equipment.\nDespite the advent of X-ray diffraction and microbeam techniques to determine quantitative chemistry\, the utility of the ore microscope has not been rendered obsolete. Interpretation of replacement and weathering processes\, textures\, and intergrowths can significantly affect the outcome of ore beneficiation – and only visual observation with polarized–reflected light can provide that information.\nThis will be a one-to-two hour lecture\, and will assume a basic knowledge of mineralogy. \nLecture Outline:\nThe ore microscope: Construction\, light path\nReflected light: Incident/bright field vs. oblique/dark field illumination\nPolarized light: Plane and crossed polars\nOre mounts & ore leveling press\nBasic Properties: Color\, reflectance\, hardness\nOptical Properties: Observations in plane polarized light (bireflectance\, cleavage); observations in partly crossed polarized light (anisotropism\, twinning\, internal reflections)\nGeneral Observations: Weathering/alteration\, replacement\, exsolution\, deformation\nMineral groups: Native elements\, sulfides\, sulfosalts\, oxides\, arsenides\nResources for ore mineral identification: Texts\, charts \nAuthor Biography\nDaniel Kile was formerly a Research Geochemist with the U.S. Geological Survey\, and currently is Scientist Emeritus with that organization\, as well as Adjunct Faculty at the Hooke College of Applied Sciences (Westmont\, Illinois)\, where he teaches Optical Crystallography. He has taught Ore Microscopy at both the Colorado School of Mines and at the Hooke College of Applied Sciences\, and was previously Adjunct Faculty at the Colorado School of Mines where he taught a semester class in Optical Mineralogy. He has written nearly 150 articles and abstracts in the fields of mineralogy and environmental sciences\, published in professional journals and magazines\, and has been a guest lecturer at numerous earth sciences organizations over the past 40 years. \nOnly $5 per person! Free to Museum Members.\nPlease RSVP to 719-488-0880 or email rsvp@wmmi.org
